Role:
This position is for a Mechanic / Deckhand / Delivery Driver. This is a full-time position averaging 40 hours per week for approximately 9.5 months of the year, beginning in mid-March 2027.
Although the position follows the seasonal nature of our oyster farm, we are looking for someone interested in returning for multiple seasons and becoming a long-term member of our team. An annual salary arrangement may be available for the right candidate.
Experience or training in boat and small-engine mechanics is required. The ideal candidate will be comfortable troubleshooting and maintaining outboard motors, pumps, generators, haulers, ice machines, pressure washers, and other farm equipment, as well as performing basic vehicle maintenance.
This person should be organized, proactive about preventative maintenance, and capable of taking ownership of maintenance records, repair needs, parts, tools, and related purchases. We are looking for someone who can step into the position with a strong mechanical foundation and take responsibility for keeping our equipment organized and running well.
The position also includes regular work as an oyster farm deckhand and delivery driver. Candidates with experience operating boats, hitching trailers, and towing boats will be prioritized. No special commercial driver's license is required.

Mechanic Responsibilities:
Perform routine maintenance on outboard motors, including oil changes, basic service, troubleshooting, and general repairs.
Diagnose mechanical problems and perform repairs within your skill level; recognize when professional or specialized service is needed.
Maintain and troubleshoot bilge pumps, water pumps, winches, haulers, ice machines, pressure washers, and related equipment.
Perform routine maintenance and troubleshooting on gas-powered generators and other small engines.
Perform basic maintenance on farm trucks and delivery vehicles, including monitoring fluids, tires, batteries, lights, and routine service needs.
Conduct routine inspections of boats, vehicles, trailers, tools, and mechanical equipment to identify problems before they result in breakdowns.
Maintain an organized preventative-maintenance schedule for boats, vehicles, motors, generators, pumps, tools, and other equipment.
Track maintenance and repair records, including service dates, work performed, parts used, upcoming maintenance, and equipment issues.
Identify and purchase appropriate parts, fluids, filters, tools, and other maintenance and repair supplies as needed.
Maintain an orderly inventory of commonly used maintenance supplies, spare parts, and tools.
Keep workspaces, tools, mechanical areas, and equipment organized and in good working condition.
Communicate clearly with owners and managers about larger repairs, equipment needs, safety concerns, and upcoming maintenance.
Help develop practical systems that improve the reliability, organization, and longevity of farm equipment.
Deckhand / Oyster Farm Responsibilities:
Safely operate and work aboard commercial vessels approximately 21–28 feet in length, including boats with tiller and helm steering.
Assist with daily oyster husbandry and general farm operations, including handling and cleaning oysters and farm gear.
Assist with hauling, moving, deploying, retrieving, and maintaining farm gear.
Operate winches, haulers, pumps, and other equipment used in farm operations.
Work effectively as part of a small crew while also completing assigned tasks independently.
Work outdoors and on the water in rain, wind, cold, heat, and changing weather conditions.
Follow farm safety procedures and proper vessel and equipment operating practices.
Previous shellfish aquaculture experience is a plus but is not required.
Delivery Driver Responsibilities:
Safely operate a small refrigerated delivery truck for oyster deliveries and pickups, generally twice per week during the busy season and once per week during the slower season.
Keep the delivery vehicle clean and organized.
Monitor the vehicle for routine maintenance needs and address or report mechanical concerns promptly.
Complete oyster receiving, delivery, and traceability paperwork accurately, legibly, and in an orderly manner.
Use company tagging, delivery, and farm-management apps as required.
Interact professionally and courteously with customers, restaurants, wholesalers, other farms, and vendors.
Keep farm vehicles fueled and ready for use.
Hitch and tow boat trailers as needed, including moving boats to and from winter storage, launch sites, and maintenance locations.
Job Qualifications:
The ideal candidate will have:
Experience maintaining and repairing outboard motors.
Familiarity with small engines, pumps, generators, winches, haulers, basic electrical systems, and other marine or farm equipment.
Basic knowledge of truck and vehicle maintenance.
Experience safely operating small boats, including tiller and helm steering.
A valid driver's license and ability to safely operate a small refrigerated delivery truck.
Experience hitching trailers and safely towing boats.
Good organizational skills and the ability to maintain accurate maintenance and delivery records.
The ability to work independently, identify what needs to be done, prioritize tasks, and follow projects through to completion.
Good judgment and an understanding of when repairs can be handled in-house and when professional service is appropriate.
A willingness to learn oyster farming practices and participate fully in farm operations.
Comfort using a smartphone and organizational apps. Access to an iPhone is preferred for compatibility with apps used for farm operations and deliveries.
An interest in returning for multiple seasons and becoming a consistent, long-term member of the farm team.
Physical and Working Requirements:
This is an active, hands-on position. The employee must be able to:
Regularly lift and carry up to 30 pounds and occasionally lift up to 50 pounds.
Sit or stand for extended periods depending on the day's work.
Climb aboard vessels from shore, docks, and other access points.
Safely work aboard small vessels and maintain balance on wet or moving surfaces.
Work outdoors and on the water in a wide range of temperatures and weather conditions, including rain, wind, heat, and cold.
Work safely around water, machinery, engines, moving equipment, fuel, tools, and other conditions typical of a commercial oyster farm and marine work environment.
